About this Event
Discover the rich tapestry of Palestinian culture through the timeless art of Tatreez (cross-stitch) embroidery. At P21 Gallery, we invite you to join a special three-part workshop series designed to immerse you in the history, technique, and profound beauty of this ancestral craft. More than just a needlework class, this is an opportunity to connect with a narrative of resilience, identity, and artistic expression that has been passed down through generations of Palestinian women.
Palestinian embroidery is a vibrant language of symbolism and storytelling. Historically, specific patterns, colours, and motifs were unique to different villages, acting as a visual identifier of a woman’s origin and heritage. From the iconic qelayed (necklace) patterns of Bethlehem to the cypress trees of Jerusalem and the red saree motifs of the coastal regions, each stitch carries meaning. Traditionally adorning the ceremonial thobe (dress), this embroidery utilises lush silks and cottons on hand-woven linen, creating a stunning testament to skill and patience.
Over three immersive weekly sessions, our Tatreez expert, Rifqah Al Tamimi, will guide you from complete beginner to creating your own embroidered piece. Born and raised in Hebron (Al-Khalil), Rifqah Al Tamimi’s journey in Palestinian embroidery began in childhood, inspired by the skilled hands of her grandmother and the women in her family. This early immersion gifted her with a profound knowledge of traditional patterns and techniques from the Hebron region. Rifqah now channels this heritage into her teaching, offering students not just technical skill, but a meaningful connection to Palestinian culture and history. She is passionate about ensuring this living art form continues for generations to come.
Course Structure:
* Workshop 1: Foundations & History (Saturday, 31st January, 12-3pm)
We begin with an introduction to the cultural significance and regional variations of Palestinian embroidery. You will learn how to set up your fabric, transfer traditional patterns, and master the fundamental cross-stitch. By the end of the first evening, you’ll have practised your stitches and chosen a meaningful design for your personal project.
* Workshop 2: Technique & Development (Saturday, 7th February, 12-3pm)
Delving deeper, this session explores additional stitches and the art of colour theory within the Palestinian palette. With dedicated one-to-one support, you will progress steadily on your chosen piece—whether a cuff, a panel for a tote bag, a framed artwork, or the beginning of a larger garment.
* Workshop 3: Completion & Storytelling (Saturday, 14th February, 12-3pm)
The final workshop focuses on finishing techniques, learning how to neatly secure your work, and discussing the preservation of this craft. In a supportive, communal atmosphere, we’ll complete our projects, share our experiences, and reflect on the stories our newly crafted pieces now hold.
Throughout the course, you'll receive comprehensive support including all necessary materials: embroidery threads, needles, fabric, and pattern guides. We will ask you to bring your own garment or textile item to personalise—whether a cushion cover, scarf, collar, or other piece—and work towards completing it over the three sessions. Small class sizes ensure personalised attention and a supportive learning environment.
Spaces are limited to ensure personalised attention. Secure your place today and join us in keeping a beautiful tradition alive, one stitch at a time.
