The April 2nd meeting of the Honeoye Falls – Town of Mendon Historical Society will feature Rosemary Irwin, whose topic will be “Thomas Nast: Father of the American Cartoon”Santa Claus, Uncle Sam, the Republican Elephant and the Democratic Donkey‚ these cartoon characters are as familiar to us as the Liberty Bell. But cartoonist Thomas Nast not only mastered these images but worked to persuade Americans of the dangers of corrupt politics and the meaning of US values. Sometimes spectacularly brave, others embarrassingly crass—let’s spend an hour with the man whose political cartoons taught us in pictures more persuasive than words.”
Rosemary Irwin lectures throughout our local area on topics as varied as health care, history, art, and technology. She has also facilitated classes created by Harvard, Stanford, and Humanities New York, translating complex material into lively non-academic discussions. Since 2012, her mission has been “to give lifetime learners a reason to be in the room.”
The meeting will begin at 7:30pm on Thursday, April 2, 2026 at the Mendon Community Center, 167 North Main Street in Honeoye Falls. This facility is handicapped accessible. The meeting is open to the public.
