About this Event
THIS PLACE HERE is a Tāmaki Makaurau-based music project led by acclaimed multi-disciplinary artist Swap Gomez, featuring a live ensemble of musicians from diverse cultural backgrounds, including players with whakapapa and musical lineages spanning Bangladesh, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, India, Nigeria, Türkiye, Iran, Sakha, Māori, and China, with credits across Yoko-Zuna, Avantdale Bowling Club, and Grammy Award winners Kitaro and Vishwa Mohan Bhatt.
Centred on ancestral instruments and contemporary collaboration, the project blends traditional instrumentation with a modern live performance approach. Originally developed through a full-length documentary, yet to be released, focused on the players and their instruments living in Aotearoa, the project has since evolved into a distinct performance work incorporating live visual storytelling.
In 2026, This Place Here will be presented as an immersive live performance experience at Kōmanawa Theatre, Te Puna Creative Hub, across two free public shows on May 22 and 23. Combining live performance, immersive visuals, and documentary storytelling, this latest iteration creates a multi-sensory experience that brings together global instrumentation, image, and stories rooted in Tāmaki Makaurau.
