About this Event
Gwendoline Riley was born in London in 1979. She is the author of seven novels, including First Love and My Phantoms. The Palm House was published earlier this year.
The Palm House is a sharply observed, slyly funny novel of enduring friendships and small mercies. Offering us Gwendoline Riley's trademark keen observation and wit, it leaves us - somehow - with a curious sense of possibility. It is a slender masterpiece from one of Britain's finest prose stylists.
Michael Bracewell is the author of seven novels and four works of non-fiction, including: Perfect Tense, Re-make/Re-model: The Art School Roots of Roxy Music, The Rise of David Bowie (with Mick Rock and Barney Hoskyns), Modern World: The Art of Richard Hamilton and Souvenir. His writing is included in The Faber Book of Pop (Ed Jon Savage and Hanif Kureishi) and his selected writings on visual art were published in The Space Between (Ed Doro Globus). His most recent book, Unfinished Business (2023) is a sequel to his novel The Conclave (1992).
Wildly inventive and magnificently surreal, The Smiths: A Novella recounts the impact of an unconventional pop group from Manchester on one man's life. It is at once deeply romantic and laced with comedy - not unlike the band themselves - and perhaps (in fictional form) the most astute and celebratory protrait of The Smiths.
Katrina Schwarz is a Curator at Whitechapel Gallery. She is a curator, writer and editor, with a particular focus on international collaboration. Katrina was the Curator of the 2022 Deutsche Borse Photography Foundation Prize and Curatorial Adviser for the inclusive platform Art et Al. She has delivered visual arts projects in more than 35 countries, most recently for the British Council and the Australia Council for the Arts.
The discussion will be followed by an audience Q&A and book signing.
