About this Event
Recent policies and actions of the Trump Administration have raised serious concerns and occasioned intense public discussion surrounding its adherence to the rule of law. While all parties to the discussion appear to agree that the rule of law functions as a constraint on the actions of government at all levels, there is little agreement on what the rule of law consists in and what it requires.
Join the Union League Club of Chicago’s Public Affairs Committee for an illuminating luncheon discussion of the Rule of Law and the Trump Administration. Our guest participant is Colleen Murphy, Professor of Law, Philosophy and Political Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The discussion will be moderated by Raff Donelson, Professor of Law and Philosophy at Illinois Tech, and a member of the Public Affairs Committee of ULCC and Chair if its Civic Education subcommittee.
Colleen Murphy’s scholarship and teaching is centered on moral, political and legal theory, and specifically political reconciliation, transitional justice, and the legal and ethical dimensions of risk. Raff Donelson is an expert on criminal law and procedure, constitutional law, legal philosophy and moral theory. Our two participants bring a unique combination of perspectives to bear on the concept of the rule of law and its bearing on pressing questions of legal legitimacy that have arisen in the first year of the second Trump Administration.
