Join Dr. Won Moon for a comprehensive seminar on the new MSE. The course offers 8 CE credits and includes a hands-on digital workshop.
About this Event

Introduction

Dr. Won Moon will discuss the Fundamental Principles and Next Generation of MSE including Digital/AI Processing, New Appliance Designs (MSE III & IV), Updated Protocols, Simplified Surgical Procedures, and the Latest Auxiliaries. The new Digital MSE workshop will cover digital workflow for MSE positioning and STL file generation, MSE fabrication using digital processing, and Clinical MSE insertion, activation, removal, managing thin and thick palatal bones, and troubleshooting.

Course Information

The non-surgical Maxillary Skeletal Expander (MSE) has evolved since early 2000, and its application has been growing globally. With the proliferation of MSE-related publications by multiple authors, there is clear evidence to support its impact.

Despite its profound initial impact, MSE’s success has not always been predictable, and enormous efforts have since taken place to improve its design and clinical protocols over time. However, as the usage of MSE increased globally, the misusage of MSE also proliferated, propelling the frequency of unwanted side-effects and failures.

Dr. Moon’s lecture will emphasize:
  • Fundamental principles behind how MSE works
  • Easy use of digital and AI workflow for ideal MSE positioning and fabrication with new software
  • Newly designed MSE II for improved predictability and strength
  • MSE III and IV for easy management of narrow palate that may need more than one expander
  • All new expansion protocol accommodating for individual variation in bone quality and fluctuations in biological response
  • Simple chair-side surgical procedures for failed cases: Cortopuncture, piezocision (no more SMARPE or SARPE)
  • New MSE auxiliaries for comprehensive orthodontic movements after MSE
  • Troubleshooting: What to do when things don’t work out
  • Airway issues: Evidence vs. Clinical cases, what do we know?
  • Non-surgical orthopedic Class III correction for mature patients: is it possible?

The new Digital MSE Workshop will take place in three parts:

Part I (Digital MSE): Hands-on Digital Workflow

Requirements: Each participant should bring a laptop and upload the sample DICOM and STL files (provided at the course)

  1. Registration: Each participant will log-on for account setup with individual computer
  2. Patient File Creation: Each participant will learn how to setup patient files and enter patient information (sample patient info will be provided)
  3. Data Uploading: Uploading CBCT and STL (provided), and requesting data processing (segmentation and image processing)
  4. Software Workflow: Learning how to navigate the software to acquire the recommended MSE position, and modify/finalize the MSE position
  5. Fabrication Options: Downloading (for self-fabrication) and forwarding (for lab-fabrication) the STL file of ideal MSE position or ordering MSE directly from designated/certified laboratories.

Part II (Lab Work): MSE fabrication (Video Demo)
  1. Fabrication of MSE with metal printed bands: MSE will be positioned on the 3D printed typodont from the STL file produced in Part I, and the supporting arms will be contoured to the metal printed bands
  2. Fabrication of MSE with manually fitted bands: MSE will be positioned on the study model with a 3D printed jig produced from Part I, the arms will be contoured to the bands, and using the same jig for cementation will be demonstrated.

Part III (Clinical): MSE insertion, activation and removal, and clinical tips (Hands-on Workshop)
  1. Check List: What to check when evaluating MSE before cementation
  2. Micro-Implants Insertion: Anesthesia methods, using both the mini-hand-driver and Ratchet Wrench, and what not to do
  3. MSE Activation: Overview of activation protocol
  4. Removing Micro-Implants with the mini hand-driver
  5. Managing patients with thin palatal bone with both manual and digital procedures
  6. Managing patients with thick palatal bone and/or torus: Cortopuncture and piezo-surgery
  7. Troubleshooting: Loose implants, tissue impingements, etc.

More Information
