Caroline Calouche’s The Nightingale is set in today’s world where a self-made millionaire is obsessed with birds. Her favorite bird is the nightingale and she searches avidly for it in the forest outside her home. One day she spots the nightingale and they become friends. The millionaire birder is very excited that the nightingale has followed her home that she wants to keep it in her home. So she tells her servants to capture the bird in a cage. The nightingale is not happy about being caged and becomes very sad. The servants have success in begging the millionaire to let the nightingale go. To replace the nightingale, a servant reminds the millionaire birder that she filmed the nightingale on her phone. She watches the video over and over and over again until she is no longer well. Her servants are worried and go to find the nightingale and beg her to return. The nightingale is wary and so returns cautiously. The millionaire comes out of her slump and is excited to see the bird. She promises to never cage her again.
The Nightingale is a timeless story about authenticity and boundaries.
