About this Event

ONLINE : ZOOM TRAINING

Duration: 6,5 hours including lunchtime and breaks

Target Audience: Staff within the partnership working across LLR with adults and/or children over 16, who have experience working to the Mental Capacity Act or have completed the MCA basic awareness course.

Session Aim:

This course aims to enable qualified social workers and other social care staff to maximise their skills in implementing the Mental Capacity Act 2005 confidently and apply this in daily practice.

The course will include the following key topics:

Importance of the Mental Capacity Act – recent case law

Why do I need to use the MCA? Consent and the MCA overview

When should I assess capacity?

Assessment of capacity – detail

The Importance of use or weigh – examples

How do I assess capacity? Practical points

What should I write? Guidance from case law and local policy/systems

Implied consent? Care plans and frequency of assessments

Best Interests – overview and detail

Best Interests meetings – guidance

Families, consulting and disputes with best interests

Court of Protection – when and why to use

Social work assessments and reviews – applying the Act

Restraint – definition and criteria for use

Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards - when, where and why

Identifying care plans that may be DoLS and Local Authority responsibilities

Advocacy (IMCA) – the right to IMCA and the duty to refer

Lasting Powers of Attorney & Deputies – impact on care and challenging

Working with LPA’s and Deputies in practice and dealing with concerns

Session Objectives:

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

Understand the key parts of the Mental Capacity Act 2005

Explain how their working practices will be affected by the legislation

Demonstrate how the Act will affect their clients / service users

Illustrate how they will use different parts of the Act in their job role

Trainer : Edge Training and Consultancy, who have been commissioned by the Leicester Safeguarding Adults Board and Leicestershire and Rutland Safeguarding Adults Board to run the training on The Board's behalf.

“19. Understand importance of sharing information with relevant agencies”.
