The evil Prince Prospero (Vincent Price) is visiting a local village under his rule when he finds a peasant who has died of the plague called the Red Death. Realizing what this means, he orders the village burned, abducts a couple of the villagers, retreats to his castle and asks the rest of his court to join him. He plans to lock the doors, force his hostages to fight for his entertainment, torture them for sport, and basically ride this whole plague thing out in comfort and luxury. But some uninvited guests attend his ball. And they’ve got their own plans.
Based on two Edgar Allen Poe short stories — the namesake one, and a second called Hop-Frog — The Masque of the Red Death is directed by Roger Corman, the seventh in a series of eight Corman adaptations mostly starring Price like House of Usher, The Pit and the Pendulum, and Tales of Terror. But as thrilling and fun as they all are, Masque might be our favorite. Celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, Masque is delightfully garish in its celebration of the obscenity and sadism of Prince Prospero, and irrepressibly joyful in presenting him with his just desserts.
