About this Event

Join us for the fifth installment of the Charnley Conversations lecture series, hosted by the Society of Architectural Historians and the Charnley-Persky House Museum. This lecture, The Life and Work of George W. Maher, is produced in partnership with The George W. Maher Society

About the event:
The Life and Work of George W. Maher: In the effort toward an Indigenous Architecture, speaker Kenneth Jellema will go back to GW Maher's roots in Charleston, WV in 1864 including his apprenticeships, as well as his independent work starting in 1887. His use of the word Indigenous refers to his determination to create buildings suited to their unique locations, and not inspired by a different time and place. GW Maher created many works all over the midwest, including over 40 buildings in Kenilworth, IL, where he lived.

Join us for glass of wine, refreshments, and light bites at 5:30PM, followed by the presentation, and more conversation afterwards. Proceeds will support the Charnley-Persky House Museum and the George W. Maher Society.

Since this is a program with limited seating, please cancel your reservation if you are unable to attend.

Venue:
This lecture takes place at the Charnley-Persky House Museum, a National Historic Landmark building located in Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood. Designed by famed Chicago architect Louis Sullivan with assistance from his at-the-time junior draftsman Frank Lloyd Wright, the Charnley-Persky House (1891-1892) is recognized as a pivotal work of modern American architecture. We look forward to welcoming you into this unique space for an enlightening talk about preservation. In the meantime, take a virtual tour of the house.
