About this Event
The life and death of Captain Kidd.
23rd May 2026 marks the 325th anniversary of the death of Captain William Kidd, a man whose name still lingers between legend, myth and stories of buried treasure.
Beginning at Wapping Station, this walking tour will take you through the historic Thames riverside streets, which have witnessed centuries of booming trade, war, crime, and poverty.
Along the way, we’ll imagine the atmosphere and characters of the past as we regale tales of smugglers, pirates and everyday life in 17th Century Wapping.
As we progress along Wapping High Street, we will dive into the fascinating story of the life of Captain Kidd and his legacy which has been immortalised in the books and films of the pirate genre for over three centuries.
We’ll explore the final chapter of his life and the events that brought him to his fate in Wapping.
As we end the tour, we will reflect on whether history played fair in his story, as we close with a drink in the Captain Kidd, a riverside pub a place that still bears his name.
