About this Event
A man who loves a challenge!
With the November start to the 2024 Vendee Globe round the world sailing race in the news, we are delighted to welcome record-breaking sailor Jean-Luc Van Den Heede, to talk about life as a competitive round the world racer, as told in his new autobiography The Last Sea Dog.
Jean-Luc has rounded Cape Horn12 times and completed 6 solo circumnavigations resulting in 5 podium places and 1 world record. His career culminated in winning the 50th Anniversary Golden Globe Race in 2018-9.
His, is an amazing story of a man who has faced the toughest of times at sea and won through. Having been born far from the sea, he became a maths teacher but it was through books that he developed a passion for sailing and the idea of pushing oneself beyond one’s limits. He is friendly and easy to approach, but he is also a formidable competitor with an abundance of courage and perseverance. The Last Sea Dog shows how he planned his success ‘Caution and precaution. Patience and perseverance’, and also how, at the age of 73 you are never too old to sail alone around the world without stopping and return in good health – as the winner!
The event will start promptly at 7.00pm.
