About this Event

The Land, the Sea, and the In-Between: Visualising Migration

As the word migration remains as politically charged and societally divisive as ever, interest in migration histories has risen. Drawing on Dr Louis Netter and Dr Kremena Dimitrova’s practice-based research and their wider artistic work concerned with visualising migration, this three-part interactive event— a joint talk, a pop-up exhibition, and a co-creation workshop—will present reportage drawing and documentary comics as forms of historical investigation. The event will showcase how these intergenerational, multifaceted, and embodied text/image methods of witnessing allow for fresh perspectives on the past that can widen academic debates on migration, history, and historiography. From individual experiences to collective journeys, participants will be invited to experiment with storytelling through artistic expression. We will co-creatively explore reportage drawing and comics making to represent tales of migration, identity, and belonging that can challenge dominant socio-political narratives.

Come join us for a thought-provoking event at Topolski Studio where we will explore the various aspects of migration through visual representations. From the struggles faced on land to the challenges encountered at sea, and the complexities of the in-between spaces, this event will offer a unique perspective on the journey of migrants. Immerse yourself in the powerful imagery and narratives that capture the essence of migration, shedding light on the experiences of those who have embarked on these journeys. Whether you have a personal connection to migration or simply want to gain a deeper understanding of this global phenomenon, this event is sure to inspire and educate.
