April 19, Sunday, 2:30 pm – St. Andrew’s UnitedNow for something different! The Island Consort Chamber Choir has a spring program that celebrates our global community: 19 songs from 19 different countries. Titled Travellin’, the repertoire is a wonderful mix of cultural variety and expression and, yes, we even have two Early Music selections.
The program begins with an Italian madrigal that celebrates Spring, and then a beautiful slow movement from a J.S. Bach Orchestral Suite. This is followed by a hymn in Russian, a Basque celebration, and pieces from Hungary, Ireland, Argentina, Ireland, South Africa, and Korea, concluding the 1st half with a medley of Black American folk tunes.
The 2nd half begins with an ethereal piece by Latvian, Eriks Esenvalds, featuring tuned wine glasses, then a vocal simulation of an Indonesian gamelan, followed by songs from Scotland, England, Sweden, France and Cuba, ending with a well-known Canadian folk song.
At this time of global conflict and uncertainty, we invite you to take a global musical journey, to share with us the many faces of music from around the world, and the multiculturalism that makes us Canadian.
