About this Event
Politics for the last ten years or more has been in turmoil. New parties have appeared, mostly on the populist right, while old ones have declined. Thinge once untinkable or unsayable are now regularly thought, said, and done. The recent book by Steve Davies "The Great Realignment: Why the New Right is Here To Stay" explains what has happened and more importantly why - the explanation means we are not looking at anything temporrary but a lasting and structural reordering of politics in most countries. In particular the commonly understood meaning of 'left' and 'right' has changed, even if many have yet to realise this. The talk sets out the argument and analysis and sets out what the politics of the next few decades will look like.

About the speaker
Dr Steve Davies is a graduate of the University of Saint Andrews where he also gained his PhD (in History). He taught for thirty years at Manchester Metropolitan University and is now Senior Education Fellow at the Institute of Economic Affairs as well as working with other think tanks and organisations. His published books include Empiricism and History, The Wealth Explosion: the Nature and Origins of Modernity, Apocalypse Next: the Economics of Global Catastrophic Risk, and The Streetwise Guide to the Devil and His Works.
