About this Event
Join the Special Collections team for a guided tour of The Great Hall at London Metropolitan University. Originally built as a Victorian theatre and later renamed The Rocket, this historic venue has long been a vibrant centre for entertainment, welcoming students, staff, and the wider Holloway Road community.
From its origins in 1896 as the Great Hall of the Northern Polytechnic Institute to its transformation into a legendary music venue and a hub of student life, The Rocket has hosted everything from operas and orchestras to punk riots and pioneering club nights.
Highlights include:
- The hall’s formative years as a vibrant theatre and concert venue
- Its pivotal role in London’s LGBTQIA+ history, including hosting the first Gay Pride disco in 1972
- A key site for early drum and bass, acid house, and trance club nights during the 1990s
Whether you're a music enthusiast, history aficionado, or simply curious about the cultural legacy of London Met, this short tour will offer a unique glimpse into The Great Hall’s past. You'll also have the chance to explore material from the University Archive that documents events held across a period of over130 years.
