Frank O’Dea is a Dublin-based songwriter, pianist and producer whose work is rooted in storytelling, melody and a deep connection to Ireland’s songwriting tradition.
Music has always been part of his world. Growing up in a musical household, he was surrounded early on by songcraft and performance — his father, Vincent O’Dea, wrote Christmas Candles, a song that found chart success in Ireland and was later recorded by Bing Crosby. That sense of melody and timeless songwriting runs through Frank’s work today.
He came up through Dublin’s live scene, playing with bands like Tin Can Alley and performing in venues such as The Underground and J.J. Smyth’s, before going on to work as a pianist across some of the city’s best-known spots. Those early years shaped a style that blends live performance energy with a strong focus on songwriting.
At the core of Frank’s music is the song itself. His writing has been recognised across Ireland, picking up runner-up places in national songwriting competitions including Moville, Glinsk (runner up to Charlie McGettigan), Golden, Bantry and Sligo — a reflection of a consistent commitment to craft rather than trend.
Over the years, he has written and collaborated across a range of projects, including co-writing "The Candyman Song" with Mark Crosbie, recorded by RTÉ children’s presenter Pat Ingoldsby. His work continues to evolve through ongoing releases with projects such as "The Cardboard Cut Out Girls", "The Frabens", and "The Frank O’Dea Songbook", alongside other collaborations and studio work.
There’s a quiet consistency to what he does.
No rush, no noise — just a steady focus on writing songs that hold together, that say something, and that last
