Introduction to a structured method to access the unconscious
About this Event

This workshop, part of a series of seminars, explores techniques from Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP), an evidence-based, emotion-focused, accelerated form of dynamic psychotherapy. ISTDP emphasises the somatic experience of emotions in the here and now; monitoring unconscious signalling of anxiety in the body; and developing an active approach to maladaptive defence mechanisms. The focus is on the root causes of symptoms, in particular early attachment trauma and difficulties in emotional processing.

This lecture focuses on the Central Dynamic Sequence, which is a sequence of interventions, developed by Habib Davanloo, in order to access the unconscious effectively and efficiently within each psychotherapy session.

This session will explore:

  • key theoretical and technical differences between ISTDP and traditional psychodynamic psychotherapy
  • the basic steps in the Central Dynamic Sequence
  • the initial phase of inquiry involving finding the focus for treatment
  • Potential pitfalls as the therapist sets out on the CDS
  • The trial therapy

This is a live, interactive seminar and there will be opportunity for questions and discussion.

The seminar is suitable for clinicians new to Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP) or in the early phases of learning. More experienced clinicians wanting a refresher are also welcome!

Please note the following before booking:

- all participants must be qualified and registered with a professional body, eg: HCPC, UKCP, GMC (trainees may eligible if the course leads to registration with one of these bodies)

- participants will be asked to sign a confidentiality statement

- this seminar will be held on Zoom. Participants will be asked to have their cameras on to verify identity

Lecture material will be recorded, but clinical video material will not be recorded.

All bookings are final and no refunds can be offered.
