About this Event
In this workshop, we will meander through the folds of translation—hover, linger, as we unravel the layers, at once familiar and oddly askew.
We will explore translation as laborious utterance, when one translates their interiority into transmissable codes; close reading, when translating words of an unfamiliar language into a definition in familiar language; or attentive listening, when attempting to read through the opacity in meanings.
The workshop holds space for many languages. All are welcome, whatever tongues you bring.
Date: Sunday, 24 May 2026
Time: 3–4.30PM
Venue: ෴𖥧𖤣𖥧෴ outside outhouse gallery, Brunswick Park, SE5 7RH

FACILITATOR
Stephanie Chung is a curator from Hong Kong, currently based in London. Chung holds an MFA Curating from Goldsmiths, University of London, and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Hong Kong, where she researched topics within the disciplines of sociolinguistics and cultural studies. Chung seeks to explore the curatorial potential in participatory, interdisciplinary, and site-specific practices. Her curatorial practice is informed by research interests in language politics, the fluidity of community, publication as artistic/curatorial practice, and the potentiality of thalassocentric thinking, often engaging with political ambivalences within and between narratives. She has delivered projects with organisations including Deptford X, Chisenhale Studios and Cubitt Artists, and was previously a Curatorial Fellow at Goldsmiths CCA (2024-25). Her early experience was rooted in Hong Kong’s non-profit art sector, where she worked closely with community partners and researchers.
ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Curated by Charmaine Wah, Refrains on the Edge of Appearance is a curatorial project that examines Edouard Glissant’s concept of opacity through the framework of language—in its sound, text, narration, translation and censorship. This exhibition is supported by Shoes Off, a growing collective and network of creatives based between the UK and Southeast Asia.
