About this Event
Discover the textile history of South London’s beautiful River Wandle! This rare chalk stream habitat was once an industrial powerhouse, turning the wheels of London’s textile industry for hundreds of years. Elly Platt, a textile artist and River Wandle enthusiast, will guide you on a walk along the Wandle Trail from Hackbridge Community Garden to Merton Abbey Mills. You’ll learn about the textile processes that relied on the Wandle, from calico bleaching and dye milling, to the print works of some of Britain’s most famous textile manufacturers, including William Morris and Liberty. You’ll also have an opportunity to learn about Colour and Cloth, a Merton Heritage funded project at Merton Abbey Mills, and visit the dye garden inspired by William Morris.
