Anne La Berge presents Tell Me More, an evening highlighting three female electronic musicians. Anne La Berge presents a solo challenging the fringes of storytelling and sound art. COW Shift Z presents her high energy experimental dance music. Show Pony premiers her A/V live show made with Tatiana Rosa & Nina Kay which uses the ageing human body as a lens for climate change.
Tell Me More is an evening dedicated to creating space for female identifying artists to present their work. The idea occurred to Laura Nygren (Show Pony) when she realised that she, like many other female identifying artists, often felt uncomfortable discussing her work and would deflect attention to other people. This diminished her space in the con-versation as well as diminished her work. She realised that often she thought people would not be interested in what she had to say until someone said to her, tell me more. This simple sentence created a warm bath in the conversation, where she felt comforta-ble telling about her work and herself.
In the first edition of Tell Me More three generations of female electronic experimental musicians will showcase their work. Anne La Berge, COW Shift Z, and Show Pony in col-laboration Tatiana Rosa, & Nina Kay. The evening kicks off with a premier of Show Po-ny’s new audiovisual work I May Fall into the Sound made in collaboration with Nina Kay & Tatiana Rosa. The songs, synths, visuals and beats take you on a journey through an ageing body using it as a lens for climate change. Anne La Berge presents a solo set of flutes, electronics, and story telling in spatial surround sound. Cow Shift Z closes the night and will make you dance with her experimental, high energy, beats. Throughout the evening you’re encouraged to ask the makers and the audience alike the question: tell me more.
ANNE LA BERGE
Anne La Berge's passion for the extremes in both composed and improvised music has led her to the fringes of storytelling and sound art as her sources of musical inspiration.
She performs as a multimedia musician and is one of the composer/performers in the Amsterdam based ensemble MAZE. She works as an improvisation and live electronics coach worldwide and currently teaches at the Royal Conservatory in the Hague.
In 1999 she co-founded Kraakgeluiden, an internationally renown improvisation series based in Amsterdam, that explored combinations of acoustic and electronic instruments using real-time interactive performance systems. Many of the resulting musical collabora-tions took on a life beyond the Kraakgeluiden series, which ceased in 2006. La Berge’s own music has evolved in parallel, and the flute has become only one element in a sound world that includes computer samples, the use of spoken text and electronic pro-cessing.
She can be heard on the Largo, Artifact, Etcetera, Hat Art, Frog Peak, Einstein, X-OR, Un-sounds, Canal Street, Rambo, esc.rec., Intackt, Data, verz, Real Music House, Relative Pitch, Carrier, Present Sounds Recordings and Splendor Amsterdam labels. Her music is published by Frog Peak Music and Alry Publications; and her Max-patch based composi-tions are available from her privately.
She is a founding artist of the Splendor Amsterdam collective of musicians who have transformed an old bathhouse in Amsterdam into a cultural mecca, where she regularly produces and shares small scale concerts with international guests, and she is the direc-tor of the Volsap Foundation that produces innovative music projects and international tours.
"The miracle of her sound technique is supported by, among other things, different lip-positions, attacks, ways of breathing, distance from the microphone – everything has been foreseen and elaborated. . . Her textures are often two-voiced. It is all so complicated that it defies description and yet it sounds very natural, like a bird’s song." - Muusika, Tallin
"La Berge is a precursor of some of the important things contemporary composition has now come to mean." - The Wire
COW Shift Z
Francisca Martins, also known as COW Shift Z is a composer and performer of electronic music. Her practice as a composer focuses on integrating different music genres in her artistic language. The electronic dance music gives her the common ground to express her inner worlds and tell the stories with a free and experimental mindset.
As a performer, she is interested in rhythm and groove puzzled with aggressive, industrial sounds. She is a creative programmer exploring new instruments that let her improvise with her own sound design and music intuition.
Over the past years COW Shift Z created diverse projects in distinct areas of music. Mentioning her EP “Funeral for the Selves”, multiple live-sets played in clubs mainly in The Netherlands and Portugal. She also created the “Biljimeiri Anthem” for the Utopa Organ and electronics and other multimedia projects, such as “buffer manelzinho 1204.8” a multimedia opera.
SHOW PONY
"Like Björk on a good day."- Beatradar
Show Pony is the alter ego of American double bassist Laura Nygren. Show Pony came into existence after years of singing quietly at home with her instrument, writing songs about heartbreak, atoms, and the absurd. Her debut EP written in collaboration with No Compliments was released in May 2021 during Rewire.
Laura Nygren is an American double bassist, singer, electronic musician, and producer, based out of the Netherlands. She enjoys the music of the moment, the performers of the present, and the tunes of today. A lover of chamber music and orchestral playing, Laura has appeared with Sinfonia Rotterdam and Berlin based ensemble s t a r g a z e. She is a founder the new music trio T R O M P O, indie-folk duo Woo Girls, and has her experi-mental pop act Show Pony. An active collaborator, Laura has worked with artists from all genres of music. She has toured with singer Soap & Skin as well as participated in writ-ing sessions with Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz) and Simon Tong (The Verve). Laura’s work often explores feminism and technology through the ecological phenomena.
