Come and make a lantern with us at the Nelson Provincial Museum, ready to carry through the Cathedral Gardens on the opening night of Te Ramaroa on Friday 3 July.Working with Museum Public Programmes Coordinator Jolie, you'll build a hand-carried lantern with a sturdy paper frame, paua-inspired bands and long flowing tails that ripple as you walk. You can follow our template or take it in your own direction. We'll have paper, card, some decorative materials on hand, and you're welcome to bring anything else you'd like to weave in.
On opening night, you'll carry your lantern through the park as part of the Wishing Walk, winding past the festival's lightworks. At the end, every lantern gets hung in a wishing tree - a glowing cluster of everything we've made together, for the city to come and see all festival long.
Suitable for all ages. Tamariki under 13 need a grown-up with them. This is a drop-in session, so come anytime between 12pm and 3pm. It will take around 45 mins to make a lantern.
This workshop will repeat outside the Make it Nelson dates on: Friday 3 July 4-7pm (Opening night Te Ramaroa) & Saturday 4 July 4-7pm, at Nelson Provincial Museum.
