WHY?
I (Maria from Kaboom! and Kid Hyena) am a musician, tap dancer, performer and teacher. I have been musically active in bands for 15 years now where I write my own music, sing, play melodica and synthesizers, and tap dance. With my bands I have performed in many types of music venues, festivals and events across Europe and the UK, and have delivered workshops centred around my strongest skills which are body percussion and tap dancing. In these workshops I convey the knowledge of these skills with the power of these tools to become a catalyst for positive change in one self.
In November 2022 I moved to Plymouth and in January 2023 I started delivering rhythm tap dance classes for the community and the scene has been growing in a very uplifting, powerful and positive way. Rhythm tap dance has both touched me and my students in many positive and different ways, I feel very grateful for all the amazing people that I have had the chance to meet! Before me, there was no rhythm tap dance scene in the city, and I love to teach to bring this beautiful artform which brings immense positive mental and physical attributes to anyone who experiences it. Bringing a renown dancer to the city is an exceptional opportunity which will allow everyone to enjoy this artform from a different perspective.
Rhythm tap dance has offered me a beautiful path in my life. I have been a musician all my life, and from a very young age I started performing and rhythm was always a great passion of mine. This brought me to study body percussion, and from there I discovered tap dancing 15 years ago. Since I discovered it, I completely fell in love with it and have never stopped dancing. I applied all my musical and rhythmical knowledge to this artform, using my feet as a drumkit, applying it to my musical band and exploring it from many different avenues. As a person I like to break down boundaries of perception, and this is what I have since done with my tap dance journey . That's why I think that anyone can dance, anywhere, anytime! Come and have a try!
