This essential one-day workshop offers Kindergarten/Preschool and Foundation teachers an overview of the Talk for Writing approach in the first years of schooling through the lens of creative fiction. The process is illustrated to participants via modelling, student examples and videos of shared and guided writing.

Participants will explore many practical strategies to develop young children as storytellers and writers through building banks of ideas, phrases, sentences, deepening understanding through play, and explicit grammar and sentence level work.

This workshop will cover;
- The three-stage pedagogy – Imitation, Innovation and Invention – which are the basis of the Talk for Writing approach, and allows students to move from dependence to independence in a systematic, scaffolded way;
- Reading as a Reader – Students are guided to understand the model text at a deeper level focusing on the implicit and explicit development of a child’s vocabulary and the use of play to assist with comprehension;
- Reading as a Writer – Understanding the structure of stories and the key connectives to support the composition of our own creative stories;
- Development of sentence and grammatical skills, with a focus on functional application of grammar in context, through explicit scaffolds selected to meet specific instructional needs of students;
- Formative assessment of oral story creation, in order to track student progress and guide teaching goals;
- A managed transition into writing with the considerations and scaffolds that are required; and
- Planning for a unit of work, based on instructional needs of students and the curriculum/ progression guide.

Participants will leave this introductory workshop having planned for a unit to implement immediately.
