Course Description

This course introduces students to the fundamental theories and practices of Tai Chi (Taijiquan)/Qigong, two integral components of traditional Chinese physical culture that emphasize the harmony between body and mind. Through progressive training, students will learn basic Tai Chi postures, movements, breathing techniques, and meditation skills designed to promote physical health, mental balance, and overall well-being.

The course combines practical training with cultural and philosophical understanding, helping students appreciate the principles of Yin and Yang, Qi (vital energy), and the Confucian, Taoist, and Buddhist ideas embedded in Chinese martial arts and health cultivation traditions.

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate proficiency in fundamental Tai Chi/Qigong forms.
  2. Understand the theoretical foundations of Chinese health philosophy and energy cultivation.
  3. Apply Tai Chi/Qigong techniques for relaxation, concentration, and stress management.
  4. Develop body awareness, coordination, and balance through mindful movement.
  5. Appreciate the cultural and philosophical values of traditional Chinese wellness practices.

Teaching Methods

  • Demonstration and practice: step-by-step instruction in Tai Chi forms and Qigong routines.
  • Lectures and discussions: exploring cultural, historical, and scientific perspectives.
  • Group practice: encouraging peer learning and cooperation.
  • Self-reflection: maintaining practice journals to record physical and emotional progress.

Time: Thursday 13:00-14:00
