About this Event
Super Saturday
Educational Conference for Parents and Caregivers of Children with Mental Illness
Theme: Family Roadtrip to Mental Health
This year, NAMI Minnesota is holding a virtual half-day conference on Saturday, February 8th from 9:00 AM -1:30 PM!
We are focused on three routes to mental health this year, because we know parents and caregivers' journeys and destinations are not all the same.
Road Trip to Safety
Pit Stop 1a: Question, Persuade, Refer
Learn the three steps anyone can take to help prevent suicide. Just like CPR, QPR is an emergency response to someone in crisis, and it can save lives. QPR is the most widely taught gatekeeper training program in the United States, and more than one million adults have been trained in classroom settings in 48 states. This class is for members of the community over the age of 16 who want to learn best practices in suicide prevention. This class has been approved by the Board of Social Work to provide 1 CEU upon completion. This class meets the continuing education requirement for teachers.Pit Stop 2a: Mental Health Crisis Planning
Planning for FamiliesLearn the symptoms that can lead to a crisis, steps to take, de-escalation techniques and the role of county crisis teams. Develop a crisis plan for your child and family. This class is for parents or caregivers of children.
Road Trip to Resources
Pit Stop 1b: Families as Partners
This one-hour class helps professionals understand the family perspective and gain insight into the barriers families face in the system of care and how that impacts family engagement. We ask participants to examine implicit bias and make plans to improve family engagement in their practice.Pit Stop 2b: Understanding the Children's Mental Health System
This class gives parents and guardians a comprehensive overview of the children’s mental health system, from assessment and diagnosis, to care and treatment, to public health insurance options, to supportive community services and parent advocacy. We review parent/guardian rights in the mental health and school system.
Parada para Recursos

NAMI Minnesota is also offering two optional sessions post-closing remarks for parents and caregivers!
Pit Stop 1d: Advocating for Children in Legislation
Engage in conversation with a NAMI Minnesota policy team member about how to tell your story as a parent and caregiver in the legislature to build the children's mental health system. Parents and caregivers are also encouraged to be a part of and attend NAMI Minnesota's advocacy events.
Pitstop 2d: Mock Parent Support Group
Meet with Family Peer Specialist, Beth and learn about NAMI Minnesota's support groups and how you can be in community with people who "get it." Attendees are invited to stay and chat with other parents and caregivers who have participated throughout today's event to share resources and stories in a shortened version of a support group.
