"Gimme a whisky, ginger ale on the side, and don't be stingy, baby!" Garbo's first talkie. Marie Dressler appears in a stand out role. It's about a young woman who reunites with her estranged father and falls in love with a sailor, but struggles to tell them about her dark past. Anna Christie had everything: the prestige of being the work of an important playwright; a director whom Garbo trusted, Clarence Brown; and a role that was tailor-made for her. She also had her favorite cinematographer, William Daniels, and the studio's best writer, Frances Marion, to adapt the play. (Margarita Landazuri 1/26/2005, online TCM article)
