About the instructors
MANNA - the performing name of Manna Pourrezaei - is a Philadelphia-based modular synthesist whose slow-evolving, expansive live electronic music sets invite deep listening & connection. Her synthetic works balance fluidity with surprising shifts in tone & space, encouraging listeners to engage with sound through gentle observation rather than expectation. MANNA has performed at Making Time Fort Mifflin, alongside artists such as Laraaji, Mary Lattimore, and Julianna Barwick, and at Great Circles' Passages Ambient Channels and Crossings A/V series. Her recent release on Mystery Circles - Joyful Participation in the Sorrows of Now - was composed as an exercise in the generative power of full engagement with sound & synthesis. Drawing from her studies in English, philosophy, psychology, and biomedical sciences, MANNA's work is deeply informed by her research into the cognitive and therapeutic effects of yoga, meditation, and the creative process.
Gralin Hughes, Jr. (aka Television Sky) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Philadelphia, working at the intersection of sound and visuals. He merges visual art and sound design through projection mapping, audio/visual live performances, and installation art. His work explores the manipulation of fragmented textures through modular synthesis, field recordings, and software. His artistic practice is rooted in collaboration; he uses technology to activate and elevate work by visual artists, musicians, galleries, and museums. He is a member of PhillyAV, an artist-led experimental multimedia collective, and a founding member of blkpatches, a collective of Black modular synthesizer artists. He is also a co-owner of Multiverse, a speculative fiction-themed book store. His recent collaborative work has activated spaces at the Barnes Foundation, Franklin Institute, International House, Philadelphia City Hall, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Swarthmore College, and Taller Puertorriqueño. Gralin holds an MFA in Museum Exhibition Planning and Design from the University of the Arts.
About the exhibition
marks the first U.S. solo museum exhibition dedicated to Joanna Piotrowska (b. 1985), a Polish artist based in London whose work examines the human condition through performative acts, photography, and film. Self-defense manuals and psychotherapeutic methods are used as reference points as Piotrowska explores the complex roles that play out in everyday life. The exhibition features large-scale, silver gelatin prints of subjects that probe human behavior and the dynamics of domestic relations, exploring intimacy, violence, control, and self-protection with an emphasis on gesture and touch. Throughout the galleries, the artist creates a space with domestic references from which contrasting image placement and content create an uncanny experience that reveals moments of care as well as hierarchies of power.
