Sumi ink is a high-contrast drawing and painting technique utilizing traditional, carbon-based East Asian ink in this class on clayboard. It is favored for creating rich blacks, deep tonal washes, and, crucially, allowing artists to "scratch back" or erase the ink to reveal the white surface beneath, offering excellent manipulability In this class you will learn and practice the technique, which involves distressing an 8x8 clayboard with various tools, applying ink, then using transfer paper or free drawing to leave an image. You will also will learn how to identify a range of values and create a nuanced black, grey and white etching.
