The Line up
Richard Strange
Probably uniquely in popular culture, Richard Strange really has done it all!
The founder, in 1974, of the seminal proto-punk art rock band Doctors of Madness (“The missing link between David Bowie and The Sex Pistols”- The Guardian) he went on to enjoy a solo musical career, and founded the legendary multi-media club Cabaret Futura, before working as an actor on such movies as Batman with Jack Nicholson, Gangs of New York with Martin Scorsese, Mona Lisa with Neil Jordan and Harry Potter with everyone else.
Born in London in 1951, he has been cited as an influence by everyone from Joy Division to Vic Reeves.
His collaborations include work with Damon Albarn, Tom Waits, TV Smith, Gavin Bryars, Jarvis Cocker, Ed Harcourt and Tom Robinson.
His memoir, Strange - Punks and Drunks and Flicks and Kicks was published by Andre Deutsch in 2004 and was received with glowing reviews. Jools Holland, declared it “An extraordinary memoir of an extraordinary life”, while the BBC’s Peter Curran enthused “A fantastic read. Wit and truth writ large.”
Fearless and forever restless to take on new challenges, in 2013 he sang the baritone role with the BBC Concert Orchestra and Chorus of Frank Zappa’s opera 200 Motels at the British premiere at The Royal Festival Hall, broadcast live by BBC Radio 3.
He wrote an opera, Language is A Virus From Outer Space, based on the work of US novelist William Burroughs with internationally-acclaimed composer Gavin Bryars, which premiered on London’s South Bank, as part of the London Literary Festival in 2014.
In 2019 Richard toured the show Richard Strange Performs The Songs of Lou Reed, with an all-star band including Kevin Armstrong and Terry Edwards.
He has written and directed two plays, When You Awake You Will Remember Nothing (2024) and The Black Square (2025)
The latest Doctors of Madness album, Dark Times, released a couple of years ago, was cited by one reviewer as “…the most potent and incisive musical dissection of modern life and contemporary politics released this decade”.
Expect the unexpected!
