About this Event
Following the release of the James Fernando Trio's debut album on Spring Garden Records and a national tour, the band will return to Philly for three nights of intimate performances at the Community College of Philadelphia's Spring Garden Records studio to capture the recordings of what will become the trio's second album.
Here's a quick rundown of what to expect from band leader, James Fernando:
"Music, to me, is a celebration of life. Recording a performance while the audience is sharing the space with the musicians is the best way I know to capture that celebration. Live albums have long played a vital role in jazz history, and for a band whose music thrives on spontaneity and deep musical trust, documenting our trio in this moment feels important.
But Still Alive In Philly is about more than making a great live record. It’s also an acknowledgment that survival itself is not guaranteed. As a cyclist in Philadelphia, I’ve had my share of close calls with cars, and several of my friends have lost loved ones to traffic violence. When I’m on my bike, I feel like a kid again. It’s an efficient, joyful, and green way of moving around a city—something we should all be able to do safely. But in Philly, it’s simply not as safe as it could and should be."

James is using this body of work to bring awareness to bike safety, and to some of the organizations that advocates for bicylicts in Philadelphia. For more information check out this post on his site.

These live studio concert performances will take place in room M2-08 on the 2nd floor of the Community College of Philadelphia Mint Building in the Spring Garden Records Studio. Free tickets are required to attend. All attendees will also need to sign a waiver as these recordings will be audio and video recorded.
Given the intimate nature of this event and the importance of audience energy in a live recording, we are asking attendees to only reserve a seat if they will be able to attend the entire event (each ticket provides access to two 45-minute sets with a 15 minute intermission). Also note that attendees should plan to arrive at least 15 minutes early in order to sign the waiver for attendance and reserve their seats. Doors will open at 6:15pm. If you have any questions about the event, please email [email protected] prior to attending the event.
