We are hosting an afternoon of community as we learn about Dr. Satsuki Ina's work, activism, and her book, "The Poet and The Silk Girl: A Memoir of Love, Imprisonment, and Protest." She shares her mother’s WWII incarceration story, linking wartime racism and political failure to lessons for today.Dr. Satsuki Ina, psychotherapist turned author and co-founder of Tsuru for Solidarity, a non-violent social justice organization led by survivors and descendants of the WWII roundup and imprisonment of Japanese immigrants and their American citizen children, will share the story of her mother's' torturous struggle to protect her children from harm driven by what scholars concluded was the result of, "war-time hysteria, racism, and the failure of political leadership."
Discussion will follow regarding the story's relevance for today's tyrannical repetition of history and what needs to happen now.
