Speaker Music (Live Set + Q&A), + Animistic Beliefs (Artist Talk)

The evening will begin with an artist discussion joined by Animistic Beliefs and moderated by Vanessa Fajemisin, exploring themes of diasporic memory, sonic philosophy, and radical rhythm.
The discussion is followed by a quadraphonic live performance + talkback from Speaker Music aka DeForrest Brown, Jr. , as a continuation of his research on Rhythmanalytics– a live version of the album, “Synoptic Audio,” that was recorded during his“Research As…” residency at Libby Leshgold Gallery.
About Speaker Music
DeForrest Brown, Jr. is an Alabama-raised, Ex-American rhythmanalyst, writer, musician, and curator, currently living within the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. His written work centers on a diagnostic exploration of electronic music through considerations of applied metaphilosophy and his own experiences of reasoning through synesthesia. As Speaker Music, Brown, Jr. has released three albums on Planet Mu. His debut book Assembling a Black Counter Culture (2022) was published by Primary Information. In 2023, he co-curated HOPE at Museion (Bolzano), the concluding exhibition in the TECHNO HUMANITIES trilogy. Brown’s work has been presented at institutions including the Venice Biennale Musica 2025, Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Berlin), Paris+ par Art Basel, Somerset House Studios (London), and Performa Biennial (New York). He has taught and lectured at Simon Fraser University, NYU, The New School, Harvard, Brown, and Princeton. Recent collaborations include metanarrative liner notes for Cybotron, Drexciya, and Dopplereffekt developed with Detroit techno pioneers Juan Atkins and Gerald Donald with Berlin club/record label Tresor.
About Animistic Beliefs
Animistic Beliefs are inventing a new, creole musical language. The Rotterdam-based duo repurposes forms from IDM and Global Club to create exhilarating hybrids, applying a fresh perspective that is both deeply personal and political.
‘Animism’ is the idea found in indigenous belief systems that all objects, creatures and places possess a spiritual essence. Pre-colonial thought, traditions and music connected with Marvin’s Moluccan and Linh’s Vietnamese-Chinese heritage are key inspirations and tools through which the duo explore their experience as queer POC living in the Netherlands.
Driven by tireless technical, historical and emotional research, Animistic Beliefs is a constantly evolving art project. By celebrating and unifying a diverse set of countercultural influences, the duo is challenging the expectations of European techno to make the kind of art that leaves a mark, whether in a gallery or behind a wall of haze and strobes.
