SHOW DESCRIPTION: SPEAK ENGLISH, a 60-minute solo performance, debuted at the Sala Melmac in Barcelona in January 2024 and made its US debut at the Cannonball Festival in September 2024. In this work I implicitly question how we construct and manage perception via themes of work/labor, class, and xenophobia and other doctrines of identity as much as I question the work’s own form. While at times English and Spanish are used sparingly, the work is largely without spoken text using movement, sound, and visuals for communication. I embody five different characters, each with their own live scene and soundscape. Between each live scene there is projected video with sound. The work sets up a structure that transits live and recorded material, evoking ruptures or interlacings. Low-tech props and fx devices, lo-fi sound, and messy costume transformations not hidden from view expose any possibility for magic or illusion, leaving a rough edge between fiction and non-fiction, sense and non-sense, between the theatrical and the performative.
