About this Event
Location - Tate Hall, second floor*
Drop into our Spark Cart session between 11am - 1pm to discover more about our displays by getting hands-on with real objects from our collections.
This session is designed to spark curiosity, deepen understanding, and encourage conversation about the challenges facing coral reefs—and why they matter to us all.
June marks a time to celebrate and raise awareness for our oceans, the environment, and the world’s corals. In this Spark Cart session you will get the chance to see some different coral samples up close as you join Marine Biology university student Heidi to explore the fascinating and fragile world of coral reefs.
Discover where corals are found across the globe and the different types that build and shape these vibrant ecosystems. Heidi will explore what happens when corals come under stress, including the process of coral bleaching, and the far-reaching impacts this has on marine life and ocean health.
Along the way, Heidi will uncover some of the ocean’s most remarkable processes. Learn about coral fluorescence—a striking phenomenon where corals produce vivid, neon-like pigments that act as a natural sunscreen—and explore tropicalisation, as warming seas drive species to move into new areas, reshaping marine ecosystems in unexpected ways.
Please note: there are no tickets for this drop-in session. By registering, you are simply expressing your interest in attending.
*For the session on 25 June - Due to refurbishment works, our lift will be out of service from 23 June 2026 until 3 August 2026. We apologise for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and understanding.
