This presentation explores the mission and history of wildlife refuges, with a focus on the Desert National Wildlife Refuge. Speaker Cristhian will share insights into an ongoing restoration project that aims to revegetate key areas, such as historic pastures, an orchard, and trails, using native desert plants. This collaborative effort is being carried out in partnership with the Nuwu/Nuwuvi (Southern Paiute/Chemehuevi) Tribal Nations, whose invaluable Tribal Ecological Knowledge is guiding the selection of culturally and ecologically appropriate plant species. The class will highlight how Indigenous knowledge and modern conservation practices come together to protect and restore fragile desert ecosystems. Class is free and open to all.
