About this Event
Sounds of Englishness is a free, in-person creative workshop exploring accent, identity, and belonging. We will be creating a welcoming space for women who use English alongside other languages to reflect on their voice, their experiences, and how language shapes their sense of self and place.
East London is one of the most language-rich areas in the UK, with over 100 languages spoken in the borough of Newham alone. Come along to share your experience of speaking more than one language, take part in creative activities (including zine-making and collage) and contribute to a library of accents.
The workshop is open to women aged 18-35 living, working or studying in east London. Tea, coffee and cake will be served during the workshop, and travel from Hackney, Waltham Forest, Newham or Tower Hamlets will be compensated.
Arrival is from 13.30, and the workshop will start at 14.00.
Please note: Film and photography will take place during the workshop for documentation and public engagement purposes. Participation in filming is entirely voluntary, and consent will be requested in advance. Those who prefer not to be filmed or photographed will be fully accommodated.
This event has been developed by UCL PhD students on the Creative Engagement Fellowship: a training programme exploring creative approaches to community engagement. It forms part of a series of events responding to the themes of Common Ground, an artwork by the artist James Berrington on show at UCL East Marshgate from 3 Mar - 9 Apr 2026.
The full Common Ground events programme, including further events developed by the Creative Engagement Fellows, can be found here.
