SONGSCAPES MARCH 2026 - Kata Vuoristo & Ida Marie JessenAbout the artists
Kata Vuoristo (MMus, Music Pedagogue AMK) is a Helsinki-based singer, vocal teacher, composer, and violinist. In her artistic and pedagogical work, she explores the expressive possibilities of the human voice through improvisation and seeks to create spaces for dialogue, self-expression, and community. Through composing, Vuoristo searches for ways to engage with tacit knowledge, examining how identity and authorship are shaped through encounters, exposure to new environments, and lived experience.
Voice, live looping, violin, and keyboards create a sonic landscape where Vuoristo’s Finnish roots meet her background in Western pop and jazz, alongside the colours of Brazilian and Portuguese musical traditions close to her heart. Her debut single Deixa Ela (2025), inspired by Afro-Brazilian côco rhythms, celebrates shared experiences, letting go, and surrendering to the present moment.
Ida Marie Jessen is a Danish singer and songwriter based in Helsinki. She blends elements of folk, indie, and pop, singing in Danish and English. Accompanying her voice with kantele and retuned violin, she creates an intimate and atmospheric sound.
For this performance, Ida will perform solo, as well as with her dream folk trio Alterne (DK/EST/BE). Alterne consists of Belgian violinist Oscar Beerten and Estonian accordionist Maimu Jõgeda. Together, they create their distinct dream folk sound, adding new textures to Nordic melancholy and moving between folk, pop, and indie.
About Songscapes:
Songscapes takes you on a journey of original song compositions at Vapaan Taiteen Tila. Produced by members of the Global Music department at the Sibelius Academy, this project has been running since November 2024, inviting artists to share their own music and creative visions.
The idea behind Songscapes was born from the need for a space in Helsinki’s music scene where diverse, original songs could be heard and appreciated. Though often influenced by various genres, this music doesn't fit neatly into any one category.
While the term “singer-songwriter” or the Spanish “Cantautor/a” may come close, Songscapes explores a broader sonic landscape. Over the past year, we’ve experienced a wide range of compositions, each unique in its style and story.

Kata Vuoristo (MuM, musiikkipedagogi AMK) on helsinkiläinen laulaja, laulunopettaja, säveltäjä ja viulisti. Musiikissaan ja pedagogiikassaan hän tutkii ihmisäänen ilmaisullisia mahdollisuuksia improvisaation kautta sekä pyrkii luomaan tiloja vuoropuhelulle, itseilmaisulle ja yhteisöllisyydelle. Säveltämällä Vuoristo etsii väyliä hiljaisen tiedon käsittelemiseen tarkastellen, miten identiteetti ja tekijyys muovautuvat kohtaamisten, uusille ympäristöille altistumisen ja kokemisen myötä.
Laulu, live-looppaus, viulu ja koskettimet maalaavat äänimaiseman, jossa suomalaiset juuret ovat vuoropuhelussa popin ja jazzin sävyjen sekä Vuoristolle läheisten Brasilian ja Portugalin musiikkiperinteiden kanssa. Hänen esikoissinglensä Deixa Ela (2025), afrobrasilialaisen côco-rytmin inspiroimana, juhlistaa jaettuja kokemuksia, irti päästämistä ja hetkeen heittäytymistä.
Ida Marie Jessen on Helsingissä asuva tanskalainen laulaja ja lauluntekijä. Hän yhdistelee musiikissaan folkia, indieä ja poppia ja laulaa sekä tanskaksi että englanniksi. Säestäen lauluaan kanteleella ja uudelleenviritetyllä viululla hän luo intiimin ja tunnelmallisen soinnin.
Tässä esityksessä Ida esiintyy sekä soolona että unelmafolk-trionsa Alterne (DK/EST/BE) kanssa. Alterneen kuuluvat belgialainen viulisti Oscar Beerten ja virolainen harmonikansoittaja Maimu Jõgeda. Yhdessä he luovat omaleimaisen dream folk -soundinsa, tuoden uusia sävyjä pohjoismaiseen melankoliaan ja liikkuen folkin, popin ja indiemusiikin rajapinnoilla.

Songscapes on yhteisöllisyyttä ja inspiraatiota – yhdessä koettuja hetkiä monimuotoisten biisimaisemien äärellä.
Jokainen ilta vie kuulijan matkalle Vapaan Taiteen Tilassa esitettyihin alkuperäiskappaleisiin. Tapahtumaa tuottaa Sibelius-Akatemian Global Music -linjan opiskelijat, ja projekti on pyörinyt marraskuussa 2024 lähtien tarjoten artisteille tilan jakaa omaa musiikkiaan ja luovia visioitaan. Songscapes syntyi tarpeesta luoda Helsingin musiikkikentälle tila, jossa monipuoliset ja omaleimaiset kappaleet pääsevät kuuluviin: musiikki, jota on vaikea lokeroida yhteen tiettyyn genreen.
Vaikka “singer-songwriter” tai espanjan cantautor/a kuvaa ilmiötä osittain, Songscapes kulkee vielä laajemmissa äänimaisemissa. Vuoden aikana olemme kuulleet upean kirjon eri tyylisiä sävellyksiä, jokainen omanlaisensa ja omaa tarinaansa kertova.
