Conceived in a cabin overlooking the Delaware River, Son Little’s new album Like Neptune transforms decades of self-doubt, trauma and inner conflict into a work of joy, healing and self-acceptance. Inspired by old journals discovered during lockdown, the record reflects his return to therapy and his breakthrough using Internal Family Systems — a method that helped him engage directly with his inner, wounded “parts.”
Motherhood, introspection and nature shape the album’s emotional landscape. Unlike his earlier work marked by rupture and catharsis, Like Neptune embraces softness, intuition and spiritual grounding. Created through a mix of iPad beat-making, Ableton live instrumentation, microdosing LSD, and listening to ‘70s Bowie and psychedelic cumbia, the project reconnects Little with his east-coast underground roots in hip-hop and soul.
Across 12 tracks, different “parts” of Livingston take the lead — his inner critic on “drummer,” his anxious self on “6 AM,” his vulnerable self on “inside out,” and his philosophical self on “deeper.” The playful, imaginative “Neptune” persona guides the title track and “stoned love,” while the closer “what’s good” radiates joy and desire.
With Like Neptune, Son Little redefines modern R&B through a deeply personal, genre-spanning lens. It’s a confident, soulful and transformative body of work — a testament to confronting the past, embracing change, and emerging more whole, radiant and free.
