Smart Biomaterials: Introducing Magnetism

Create living, responsive materials that actually move. In this 4-hour hands-on workshop, you'll transform simple flaxseed gum into magnetic smart biomaterials, then shape them into your own one-of-a-kind magnetic piece. The workshop will begin with a brief exploration of flaxseed gum and the component that makes it smart: magnetite. By incorporating magnetite, we can create materials that move in response to a magnetic field.

In this workshop you will:

• Learn the science behind smart biomaterials that respond to their environment
• Discover how magnetite (iron oxide nanoparticles) gives biomaterials the ability to move in response to a magnetic field
• Mix, color, and cast your own magnetic sequins from flaxseed gum
• Assemble your sequins into a unique magnetic art piece to take home
• Leave with hands-on skills for making responsive, bio-based materials yourself

No science background required. Just curiosity.

Catherine Mondoa (she/her) is a materials scientist with a passion for innovation and sustainability. During the day, she works for Material ConneXion, communicating with material manufacturers and supporting brands with materials selection and inspiration. Prior to joining Material ConneXion, she studied natural, polymer materials. As part of this study, she collaborated with Dr. Ahu Gumrah Dumanli-Parry’s lab. There, she had the opportunity to work with liquid crystals to explore structural color and its responses to magnetically induced strain. Ever since, she continues to explore her material fascination through her work and her participation in Genspace.
