About this Event
SLS is a working title for a seated, full-sound listening club concept currently being tested in Auckland.
This free RSVP-only R&D session is part of an early public test phase.
The wider SLS concept is not limited to one genre, but this session uses Hip-Hop and R&B as a focus point — through recent releases, production-focused tracks, and selected audience suggestions.
The long-term format will move across albums, artists, genres, scenes, eras, and listening themes — but this test gives us a clear starting point.
This is not a bar where music sits in the background.
It’s not a café, gallery, or art space with speakers added for atmosphere.
It’s not a nightclub where loudness matters more than detail.
And it’s not an audiophile room built around expensive gear talk or obscure playlists.
This is a repurposed large room above a professional recording studio operated by an Auckland-based producer and sound designer with an international portfolio across music, film, theatre, and dance. The space is being shaped for sonic fidelity and soundstage preservation with the same seriousness given to recorded music, live performance, and cinematic sound — built for music fans who want to feel the weight of the songs and still hear the detail.
Listening clubs and listening bars are growing around the world, influenced in part by Japanese jazz kissa culture — spaces where music is given real attention, not treated as background noise.
SLS is being explored as an Auckland response to digital overload, algorithmic playlists, endless scrolling, and the feeling that music is everywhere but rarely listened to properly.
We’re testing the room sound, seating, flow, curation, and conversation. More than anything, we’re looking for music fans who see listening as something worth showing up for — the way people show up for cinema, theatre, live gigs, or a night out. People who want to sit in a tuned room, hear music properly, and be surrounded by others locked into the same frequency.
This is about pressing pause on the noise outside, gathering in one room, pressing play together, and properly appreciating the craft, feeling, and detail inside the music we love.
