The Advanced Materials Research Facility challenges a core assumption in laboratory design: that we can predict how science will use space.

As AI-driven Materials Acceleration Platforms (MAPs), robotics, and high-throughput experimentation reshape discovery, lab programs are becoming increasingly fluid. This project demonstrates how an existing, conventionally planned facility was transformed into an adaptive platform capable of supporting evolving research workflows.

Through modular lab planning, demountable systems, and flexible MEP infrastructure, the design

enables rapid reconfiguration across high-hazard chemistry, automation, and emerging AI-driven processes. Positioned as a gateway for collaboration between government, academia, and industry, the facility prioritizes openness and shared resources to accelerate innovation.

With sustainability at the core of the research mission, the building systems aligns by implementing strategies to de-risk carbon exposure. Extensive electrification, low-carbon strategies, integrated geothermal exchange, on-site solar, and advanced heat recovery demonstrate that deep decarbonization can coexist with stringent laboratory performance requirements.

The key takeaway: future labs must be designed not as fixed environments, but as adaptable platforms for continuous change.

With more than 25 years leading complex architectural projects across Canada, Jeff is a recognized leader in science, technology, and research facilities. As Senior Principal and Regional Leader of Science + Technology at HOK, he specializes in large-scale, multi-stakeholder projects focused on innovation, long-term value, and operational excellence. He served as Team Leader for HOK’s work on the Laboratories Canada Mississauga modernization, overseeing planning, design integration, and technical coordination to support a collaborative, future-ready research environment. His portfolio includes major academic, public, and healthcare projects such as the Memorial University Core Science Facility, University of Alberta Edmonton Clinic Health Academy, and Humber River Health Wilson Site, where he is known for fostering collaboration and delivering design solutions that enhance scientific discovery and user experience. Jeff holds a Master of Architecture and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Calgary, with additional training in Florence, Italy.

Shrey Chandra, OAA, LEED AP

Shrey is a Senior Laboratory Planner and Associate at HOK with 17 years of international experience in programming, planning, and designing complex research environments. He specializes in the full lifecycle of laboratory projects, including functional programming, concept design, equipment planning, regulatory compliance, and construction administration. A recognized expert in research, diagnostic, containment, and mission-critical labs, he contributed to the Laboratories Canada Mississauga modernization as a Laboratory Specialist, helping deliver flexible, high-performance spaces aligned with federal research needs.

His portfolio spans government, academic, and health research clients across Canada and globally, including projects at Western University’s Bioconvergence Centre, the University of Waterloo’s Eye Institute, UHN, Sanofi Pasteur facilities, and multiple BSL-2, BSL-3 labs. Shrey holds an architecture degree from IIT Roorkee and a Master of Science in Architecture from Georgia Tech, is a LEED Accredited Professional, and regularly speaks on sustainability and wellness in research facilities.

Pradosh Krishnamoorthy

Pradosh is a Director of Buildings – Mechanical & Electrical at WSP Canada with more than 22 years of international experience delivering complex science, technology, mission‑critical, and infrastructure projects. He specializes in high‑performance mechanical systems, laboratory environments, district energy, and carbon‑reduction strategies from concept through construction. Pradosh played a key mechanical leadership role on the Laboratories Canada Mississauga modernization, supporting the delivery of flexible, net‑zero‑ready research facility.

His portfolio on science facilities includes major Government, academic and industrial clients including projects with Public Services Procurement Canada (PSPC), University of Ottawa, Stelco, University of Toronto and Power Co Battery Manufacturing Plant. Pradosh holds a bachelor’s degree in mechatronics engineering from Madurai Kamaraj University and is a Professional Engineer in Ontario and a certified PMP Professional.
