Acclaimed cabaret vocalists Leah Guelfi and Justin Gross* return to Downstairs at the Maj, joined by 8-piece powerhouse Red’s Tribe, for a vibrant musical journey from 1960s Jamaica to 1980s England.Featuring some of Perth’s finest jazz musicians, the show begins with a celebration of the irresistible sounds of Jamaican jazz, rocksteady, and early ska, driven by the distinctive off-beat rhythms of the Caribbean.
The extraordinary combination of rhythms brought by Jamaican immigrants with British punk rockers' energy created the iconic Two-Tone sound: a movement that reshaped popular music and remains beloved more than 40 years on. The musical journey culminates in classics such as ‘A Message to You, Rudy’, and the sounds that inspired legendary bands such as The Specials and Madness.
Relive the ska you danced to — and discover the beautiful music that started it all.
* Previous shows include The Music of Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra and The Music of James Bond.
