Tickets are still available for the Columbia Pro Cantare's "Sing Democracy 250" concert at the Jim Rouse Theatre on Saturday, May 2 at 8 pm. Come and experience two new works commissioned by the Together in Hope project: "Redeem the Dream" and "US." "I'm excited that we're participating in this national project which will feature 175 choruses in 30 states singing these works," says CPC Artistic Director Laura Lee Fischer. "Redeem the Dream" composed by Brandon Boyd, explores the promises and ideals of the "American Dream" with text from the Declaration of Independence and the Langston Hughes' poem, "Let America Be America Again." Its six movements express a variety of musical styles, from to classical to R&B to jazz. "US" by Michael Bussewitz-Quarm adapts a book, "The Bill of Obligations" by Richard Haas, and quotes different Americans throughout history and across the political spectrum, from Thomas Jefferson and Frederick Douglass to Ronald Reagan and Sandra Day O'Connor, to illustrate the Ten Habits of Good Citizens. "Both pieces are joyful and accessible, Fischer states.
A pre-concert lecture begins at 7 pm and there will be a post-concert reception. For "Sing Democracy 250" tickets, visit www.procantare.org/Tickets.html
