FEATURED ARTIST: The Galaxy’s Edge Quintet

GET TO KNOW THE ARTIST:
The Galaxy's Edge Quintet is an instrumental ensemble of unique improvisers, specializing in both late-60s modal repertoire and original compositions by its members.
The group is led by Memphis music veteran Khari Wynn, also known as James Equinox, who has over 30 years of experience. He spent more than 15 years touring with and serving as musical director for the award-winning hip-hop group Public Enemy, and continues to record and make select appearances with them. Over the years, he has also worked with Memphis legends Shirley Brown and Joyce Cobb. In Memphis, he is a member of long-running groups including Hope Clayburn's Soul Scrimmage and The Bluff City Backsliders, and performs in an improv collective with local stalwarts Art Edmaiston and Alex Greene. James Equinox is the adopted spiritual moniker of his broader musical identity, and some of his compositions under that name will be featured during the concert.
Bassist and composer Will Lang is a daring young Memphis jazz musician and a graduate of Rhodes College’s prestigious music program. He performs regularly in a variety of ensembles and is a brilliant modern composer; several of his original works will also be featured during the concert.
Multi-instrumentalist Paul Mullikin is highly proficient across multiple musical disciplines and will be featured on both percussion/drums and piano. He has worked extensively with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and has recently released an album of his original compositions, selections of which will be presented in this performance.
Saxophonist Aaron Phillips is a dynamic modern player who has been an essential part of the Memphis music scene since his arrival nearly five years ago. He leads a long-running Sunday jazz jam at The Cove, an incubatory musical laboratory for new ideas and developing musicians, and has been central to several ensembles that push the evolution of the current scene.
Drummer and percussionist Jon Harrison is an aggressive, forward-thinking musician and educator, and a graduate of the legendary University of Memphis jazz program. He has been a key member of several long-running ensembles influential to the development of the modern scene, including FrogSquad and Deepstaria Enigmatica, the latter of which earned an album write-up in DownBeat magazine.
Together, these musicians form The Galaxy's Edge Quintet, an improvisation-driven ensemble committed to encouraging new ideas through the exploration and discovery of fresh pathways of sound.
