Scotch whisky has been around for centuries, and is being appreciated in a variety of ways. Yet biases remain and certain traditions hold their ground. Why does a fair chunk of people need convincing to open their minds for single malts in cocktails? What led the whisky community to think that 'their' drink needs to be enjoyed in very specific ways? And how can we further open this delicious drink to talk about flavour and experience instead of rituals and exclusivity? Sietse Offringa – The Macallan Brand Education Manager
Sietse was born into the world of whisky in the Netherlands and it has always been close to his heart. His father is an internationally acclaimed whisky writer so childhood visits to Scotland captured Sietse’s imagination from an early age and sparked his fascination with all things whisky.
At the age of 19, Sietse’s professional whisky journey began, as he embarked on an internship under the tutelage of whisky legend Jim McEwan, which fuelled his passion for the spirit.
His growing intrigue and understanding of whisky led him to set up his own tasting events and festival in the Netherlands, increasing his profile amongst the whisky community and resulting in his recruitment as a national Brand Ambassador for The Macallan in 2011.
Sietse’s role has since expanded globally, and he now spends his days travelling the world training enthusiasts, bartenders and industry experts alike. He revels in the opportunity to share a whisky and a story.
In his role as an advocate for whisky, Sietse also works as a contributing editor to international whisky publications, where he comments on new expressions and serves and shares his passion with the world. Furthermore he is a recurring speaker on whisky at WSET training courses.
Sietse has obtained a General Certificate in Distilling at the Institute of Brewing and Distilling and also holds diplomas in both Scotch Malt Whisky at the Edinburgh Whisky Academy and Master Bartending at the Bols Bartending Academy.
