Michael Barry - Guitarist for the popular Pogues/Shane MacGowan tribute band, The nÓgs, producer and recording engineer Michael Barry has worked with top New England artists for more than three decades, including more than 25 years as engineer and co-producer to drumming legend Dave Mattacks.
As a singer-songwriter, Barry was the founder of the bands Pooka Stew, and (with Mattacks) Super Genius, releasing three albums and two EPs between them. Legendary BBC2 radio presenter “Whispering” Bob Harris named the first Super Genius album one of the “Best of the Year,” for 2003.
In 2020 Barry released his first solo album, “Party at the End of the World,” an acoustic record that Goldmine Magazine called, “a rich and riveting set of catchy, classy folk pop songs that resonate even on first hearing.” His second solo album, “Villain Songs,” was released in 2025, and hits on the dark themes Barry has explored throughout his career, once again with the support of an all-star roster of players.
Playing with Barry for this McCarthy’s show are Elizabeth Steen and John Fremer.
------------------------
Highway Hosiery is the duo project of Elizabeth Steen (accordion, keys) and Jude Heichelbech (cello, stompbox). Steen is a seasoned accordionist/keyboardist who has played and toured along Natalie Merchant, Tanya Donelly, and Billy Bragg among others. Heichelbech is a mostly self-taught multi-instrumentalist and visual artist. Together, they pen catchy tunes about trial, love and other oddities that span pop, jazz, rock and roots, with a slant born out of their deep Pennsyltucky upbringings. Both are the daughters of English professors and musicians and have occupied the same seat at the keyboards for Count Zero. They are at work on an album to be released later this year.
------------------------
Roots-rock singer/songwriter Dennis Brennan played in a succession of Boston-area bands before forming his own group in the early '90s. Born and raised in rural Berlin, Massachusetts, he began playing Worcester-area and then Boston-area clubs after graduating from high school. For more than two decades, he worked with Boston bands like the Martells, who scored a number one hit on Boston rock radio in 1980; later in the decade, his band Push Push flirted with several major label recording deals. In 1990, a major label signed the Rhode Island act Young Neal and the Vipers, and label executives pressured them to drop their lead singer and bring in Brennan. That didn't last very long, and after other "almost record deals" fell through, Brennan took a break from his singing and songwriting to work as a warehouse foreman. After a few months, he found himself growing into an increasingly prolific songwriter; some of the results -- frequently about life's hardships, trials and tribulations -- were showcased on his 1995 debut album for Rounder, Jack in the Pulpit, on which he was accompanied by guitarist Duke Levine and drummer Billy Conway of Morph*ne. Iodine in the Wine followed in 1996, and in early 2000 Brennan returned with Rule No. 1. “Into This World,” followed, in 2016.
