This pop-up class is a balance for our busy, always moving, active lifestyles by focusing on yoga poses that are more about being still, pausing, noticing, resting and relaxing. This class will consist of moving through a yin yoga sequence that targets our connective tissue, fascia, and joints. This 75-minute class focuses on yoga shapes that represent the current season in Traditional Chinese Medicine Elements. The seasonal element and information about its corresponding emotions, nature, specific bodily organs, and other attributes will be discussed as we move through the sequence. This class is open to all participants, no prior yin experience necessary.
What is Yin Yoga?
Yin Yoga has the same goals and objectives as any other school of yoga; however, it directs the stimulation normally created in the asana portion of the practice deeper than the superficial or muscular tissues (which we are calling the yang tissues). Yin Yoga targets the connective tissues, such as the ligaments, bones, and even the joints of the body that normally are not exercised very much in a more active style of asana practice. Yin Yoga generally targets the connective tissues of the hips, pelvis, and lower spine.
While this style of yoga may initially seem boring, passive, or soft, Yin practice can actually be quite challenging due to the long holds. We typically remain in each posture for 3–7 minutes, relying on gravity rather than muscular effort. All Yin poses are practiced on the mat, with no standing positions.
