Why the government banned direct action group Palestine Action, a decision that has sparked intense debate and led to thousands of arrests.About this Event
The Government’s decision to proscribe Palestine Action as a terrorist organisation has triggered widespread controversy, mass protests across the UK, and the arrest of more than 2,500 people who have publicly expressed support for the group.
In a major new Dispatches investigation, reporter Matt Shea examines the truth behind the ban, asking why the Government felt compelled to proscribe Palestine Action alongside groups such as ISIS and neo-Nazis.
The programme features an exclusive interview with Huda Ammori, co-founder of Palestine Action, in her first face-to-face interview since the group’s proscription, an exclusive interview with Ellie Kamio, one of the six Palestine Action protesters found not guilty this week of aggravated burglary at a UK subsidiary of an Israeli defence firm, moments after her release. (A verdict on charges of violent disorder against her couldn’t be reached). The programme also speaks to Jonathan Hall KC, Government Independent Reviewer on Terrorism Legislation, Lord Hain, who was in government when the Terrorism Act was introduced in 2000 and Former Independent Adviser on Political Violence and Disruption, Lord Walney.
Dispatches also interviews some of those who have been arrested for allegedly organising protests against the ban.
