Ritual for Omega and Aplha
Mai Endo and Japanese striptease dancer (踊り子) Natsu Usami snuck into the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo to dance naked amongst paintings and sculptures of dancers. This performance was presented at the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo in 2024, and is inspired by Edvard Munch’s series - a collection of prints housed in the museum, depicting a strange love story between a wide variety of animals and two humans. The video work is accompanied by Mai Endo’s writing that explores striptease and society from feminist perspectives, translated into English for the first time.
is an artist and actor whose practice explores body politics through collaborative projects. Drawing on queer feminist theory, her work incorporates notions of passivity and failure as critical strategies, realized through performance, video, and the aesthetics of manga. Recently, she presented the performance video "Ritual for Omega and Alpha" (2024), a reinterpretation of postwar Japanese striptease culture, with dancer Natsu Usami at the National Museum of Western Art.
In 2022, she was a visiting researcher at Franklin Furnace, an archival organization dedicated to non-institutional time-based art since the 1970s, during her stay in New York under the Agency for Cultural Affairs' Overseas Study Program for Emerging Artists. In 2018, she co-founded the queer feminist art zine with critic and curator Mika Maruyama.
